Some of the year 6’s have been taking part in the ‘let’s get cooking’ nationwide cookery club, funded by the National Lottery. The idea is that children and parents learn to cook together and 8 families have been coming after school on a Monday to learn cooking skills as well as tips on health and safety. They have made pizzas, fruit salad and tagliatelle in the last 3 weeks. The class has been lead by David, Mrs Atkinson and Mrs Ahmed.
On Thursday and Friday (25th and 26th of September) there has been a fire engine in the car park. Don’t worry, the school hasn’t been on fire, they have been visiting year 6. They watched a film and did other work in class before going to have a look at a fire engine in the car park. For more pictures, go to 6P’s blog.
Rocking and Rolling at the bridgewater Hall
The Bridgewater Hall was filled with the sound of music as our Year 6 and choir joined in with other schools at the Big Sing. There was dancing in the aisles and plenty of rocking and rolling. Even Mrs Rule turned up for a boogie.
For the last few Mondays, we have had an after-school street dancing club for year 5 and 6. Watch what they’ve been up to below. Turn the volume on your computer down, as it is very LOUD!
It was on 19th June 2008 when the BIRCHFIELDS athletics team (Fraz, Treyvon, Badran, Oreofe, Salman, Bilal, Halima, Chante, Saira, Wiston, Sidra, Lena, Tahmida and Fatima) Led by Mr Crowley went to show the rest what they are made of. Out of the 12 schools that took part, we finished a very respectable 6th. Special mention goes to Chante (150 metres) and Fraz (shot - put) for winning a medal each, and Treyvon won 2, getting gold for long jump and bronze in the 75 metre sprint. Below are some pictures from the contest. Click on them to make them bigger.

Jungle Fever!
On Wednesday 18th June, a group of Year 7s from Levenshulme came to visit. They performed their version of the Jungle Book to Years 4, 5 and 6 and then ran a workshop for performance club. It was particularly great to see four of our ex pupils (Amal, Ikra, Gursharan and Areeba) come and visit and perform so well.
The workshop was very good. It improved my ability to move like a monkey! (Sehrish, 6T)
The foundation unit has had some very special visitors this week. Click here to go to 1S’s page to see a video of them.
Birchfields Strikes Gold!!
On Wednesday Haris from Year 5 and Hina from Year 6 travelled by train with Mr Corteen and Mrs Maroulis to Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. They went to collect our school’s Artsmark Gold award. Artsmark is an award given by the Arts Council, England in recognition of outstanding commitment to the arts.
There was a big ceremony, with primary schools and high schools from all over the North West, collecting their awards and celebrating. Haris and Hina were chosen to represent our school because they are amazingly talented in music and drama.
We are very proud of the achievement of the pupils and staff who have worked so hard to achieve our Artsmark Gold award. Have a look at the photograph of Haris and Hina. The award will be displayed outside Miss Offord’s office.
5/6/08Neverland: Rediscovering Children’s Art.
An exhibition at the Whitworth
![]()
Over the past few months a group of children from year 4 have been visited the Whitworth Art Gallery every week. During this time their tasks have included discussions about the pieces in the exhibition, designing workshops for visitors to the gallery and reenacting an artistic workshop for children from 100 years ago. During the exhibition the children have guided visitors around the gallery and have discussed the pieces that are on display. The opening night was a great success and the children received a many compliments on their professionalism. Posters featuring the children can be seen around Manchester city centre and the Guardian have listed the Neverland exhibition as their pick of the week.
The children who are involved in the exhibition are the Neverlanders who are Arisha, Hasna, Rashida, Areej, Sa’ad, Umear, Salma, Taihba and Maharab. The teacher that is involved in the exhibition is Mrs Howse.
We drew pictures when we went into the audio pod where you draw pictures when you listen to someone speak. We held a workshop where you make what the teacher tells you to. We did tours for people where we guide them round each section.
The people in the gallery cleaned it all up just for the opening day. They put out sweets on the table for people to eat. There was a DJ and some of our suggested activities for everyone to do. You could also make badges and the Neverlanders did their tours. It was on until 4pm on Saturday 24th May. “
